Was watching Real Time with Bill Maher this evening on HBO, and Cornel West had a great quote. I'm not sure what his intent was in saying this, but he mentioned something very interesting and thought-provoking: Justice is what love looks like in public. Discuss amongst yourselves.
Anyone else seen this new series on HBO? It's about four couples at different stages in life, all having relationship problems. The 20-somethings want to get married, but he's having problems committing. The 30-somethings have been trying (unsuccessfully) for a year to get pregnant. The 40-somethings with two kids just aren't connecting with each other (read: having sex) any more. The intersection is that they all see the same marriage counselor, Dr. May Foster. In an unusual twist for TV, the fourth couple is the 50-something Dr. Foster and her husband -- we learn a bit about them and their struggles with sex and intimacy.
It's more about the life stages the couples are at and the issues they're facing, rather than who they are as people. I think the show does a good job of "keeping it real" (as much as I hate that phrase). We see real people with good and not-so-good bodies, and yes, we see them having sex, including penises and flabby white male asses (not just the women naked, which is what most TV shows focus on).
Only the first two episodes have aired, but I think I like it. More later -- it's 10:30 pm and I still haven't had dinner yet.
