You never suspect the hardware
I spent over 5 fucking, incredibly frustrating hours this evening trying to set up two brand spanking new Netgear FVG318 VPN routers. Two small offices with a single VPN tunnel connecting them for file sharing. I've done this dozens of times before on various platforms; it's normally not that hard. The older Linksys VPN routers were starting to fail (nothing quite says "Good Morning!" like a Network Cable Unplugged message on all the users' desktops) so I got these. They look good on paper, except they failed to mention that Netbios doesn't work over the VPN tunnel. FUCK YOU, NETGEAR. That's such a basic thing. Now I have to redo all the mapped drives and desktop shortcuts.
Then the router at the main office starts freezing -- no Internet, I can't even ping the LAN side of the router. Four times within an hour. Yes, I've got the latest firmware (for whatever good it does). Yes, I did a hard reset and put ALL the IP and VPN settings back in by hand and it STILL kept freezing. Finally, I said the hell with it and got an RMA. Fucking POC (piece of crap) blue plastic shits.
Yes, I'm in a lovely mood right now. It's almost 11pm and I haven't even had dinner yet.
